Courtney is widely considered an expert across medical negligence, professional conduct & health law, workers’ compensation, public liability, contractual and indemnity disputes.
In these areas she is experienced across various sectors including medical defence, health and aged care, mining, retail, hospitality, government and local councils.
Courtney joined HBA in 2021 after 13 years with Ashurst. She graduated from Griffith University in 2008 and was admitted to the High Court of Australia and Queensland Supreme Court in 2009.
Expertise
Courtney is experienced across all aspects of health law including civil claims, coronial inquests, investigations, disciplinary proceedings, and prosecutions. Her experience includes working for a large medical defence organisation, private and public hospitals, aged care facilities and the Office of the Health Ombudsman.
Courtney also has significant experience acting in workplace incidents, workers’ compensation and public liability claims. She is a trusted adviser to clients from the first incident investigation until the last piece of litigation that arises. Along the way, she assists clients with witness interviews, risk management and assessment, review of policies and procedures, training staff and then managing all aspects of litigation in the aftermath of incidents including public liability, workers’ compensation, monetary claims and breach of contract and indemnities. Her most high-profile cases include large scale incidents at mine sites, fatalities, armed robberies, assault and catastrophic injuries.
Her experience extends to all aspects of advisory work including settlement negotiations, mediations, court documents and proceedings, coronial inquests plus appearances at the QIRC, Industrial Magistrate’s Court, Coroner’s Court and Supreme Court of Queensland.
